The development of high speed quenching by the splat cooling technique was followed by work on metastable systems. Studies were conducted along lines similar to traditional phase diagram research but using intentionally metastable specimens. The primary aim of this research was the deduction of structural information on the liquid state by examining amorphous material produced by splat cooling. This report describes and seeks to interpret the structure produced in pure metals by the splat cooling technique. Author
