The prompt effects - nuclear and thermal radiation, fire and smoke, and blast phenomena - of nuclear weapon detonations on unsealed basement shelters in the pressure region up to 15 psi side-on overpressure are analyzed. The nature of the exterior and interior forces on structures are examined. Methods for calculating and for minimizing the effects of the pressure spikes, static pressures and jets through apertures are derived and illustrated. Possible hazards to shelterees are examined.
