Abstract:

A method for the automated assay of whole blood, plasma, or red blood cell RBC cholinesterase in blood samples from the dog is described. The procedure is rapid, sensitive, and highly reproducible. The effects of substrate concentration, hemolysis of RBCs, washing of RBCs, and sampling speeds have been evaluated. Normal cholinesterase levels, and normal variations in canine RBC and plasma cholinesterase during a 2-week period are given. A micromethod has also been developed it requires 75 microliters of whole blood, plasma, or RBCs for cholinesterase assay. Author
