APPLICATION OF THE LIQUID DISTRIBUTION METHOD TO THE STUDY OF THE HYDROLYSIS OF Ag(+)

The distribution of silver at 25C between solutions of quinoline Q in benzene and 3 M NaClO4,OH was studied as a function of Qorg, OH- and the silver concentration. In these experiments the reaction Ag aq 2 Q org ClO4- aq AgQ2 ClO4 org eq. const. log K 3.23 was used for the study of the hydrolysis of Ag in 3 M NaClO4 at low concentrations of silver. The data provide no evidence for the presence of significant amounts of polynuclear complexes. Furthermore, the data indicate that AgOH is not formed to any large extent in 3 M NaClO4,OH. In connection with the distribution experiments the distribution constant, Kd, of quinoline between various organic solvents and 3 M NaClO4 has been determined.
