Abstract:

Ninety Mongolian gerbils Meriones unguiculatus and 90 Sprague-Dawley rats Mus norvegicus were exposed to acute 60Co radiation to determine the relative radioresistance of the two species and the LD5030 for the 12-week-old Mongolian gerbil. For each species, three groups of 6 animals were exposed at doses of 750, 850, 950, 1,050, and 1,150 R, at an approximate dose rate of 90 Rmin. The gerbils were found to be significantly more radioresistant than the rats of comparable age. In a supplementary experiment to demonstrate more definitively the LD5030 of the gerbil, this species was exposed to dose ranges of 950 to 1,350 R. The LD5030 for the 10-12-week-old rat was observed to be 856 R, and the LD5030 for the 12-week-old gerbil was 1,132 R. Author
