Abstract:

Visual communication through computer graphics has been widely accepted as a powerful means of communicating information between the user and the machine. In attempting to portray the three dimensional shape of a displayed image, one must consider the many characteristics which relate to the observers impression of depth. These characteristics are described, their effectiveness in portraying depth is assessed, and an estimate of the software and hardware complexity needed to implement them on a two-dimensional computer graphic display is presented.
