The research sought to determine whether certain individual interpreter proficiency variables or combinations of variables are predictive of interpreter team performance and, hence, can be used in assigning functions to individuals working within a team so as to achieve optimal team performance in an image interpretation facility. Eighty interpreters were tested individually and in two-man teams. Major conclusions drawn were 1 Useful prediction of overall team performance could be obtained by weighting or simply summing the individual completeness scores of team members on tests of detection and identification under both free search and directed search conditions 2 Accuracy scores were not found to be usefully predictive of team performance 3 The more proficient the individual interpreter team components, the better the team performance 4 The better the initial interpreter, the less the improvement in team performance resultant from adding a checking interpreter conversely, the better the checker, the greater the improvement.
