Abstract:
The report presents a survey of current knowledge concerning the aerodynamic aspects of various principles which can be applied to create and retain a cushion of pressurized air between the ACV-bottom and the supporting surface. It is primarily the result of a study of a large amount of open literature, although some original thoughts on the hovering flight of annular jet ACVs were included. In the introduction a definition of the ACV is proposed, followed by a short list of significant historical data. A classification of the air cushion sealing systems into seven basic principles is discussed in the second section. The remaining part of the report presents discussions on a large number of theoretical and experimental investigations concerning the application of the seven sealing principles. Major attention was paid, however, to the annular jet principle. Author
