Abstract:

The transport characteristics of the Loeb-Sourirajan type porous cellulose acetate membranes in reverse osmosis process for the system urea-water are similar to those reported for the systems sodium chloride-water and glycerol-water. The solute transport parameter values for different solutes offer a useful means of expressing selectivity of the membranes in reverse osmosis. A system of general equations for stagewise reverse osmosis process design is presented, and their application is illustrated with a set of numerical data for water renovation from aqueous urea solutions.
