Abstract:

Radiation emitted by a hot, partially ionized plasma is indicative of the conditions within the plasma. The energy levels of the constituent atoms are perturbed by the microelectric fields of the ions and electrons, so that the emitted spectral lines are broadened by the Stark effect. The stark profile of the 23P-43L, L1,2,3 transition has been calculated for a range of electron densities between 10 to the 16th power and 10 to the 18th power electrons per cc and for temperature between 10,000 and 40,000 degrees K. The quasi-static approximation was used for ion effects and a generalized impact approximation was used to describe the electron effects. Tabulated profiles are presented that include the fine structure of the lower state. Error estimates show that the profiles are accurate to about 10 percent. Author
