Abstract:
The monograph summarizes systematically the results of recent investigations on cumulus dynamics carried out in China and in other countries. In particular, the works of the authors have been used to illustrate the progress in this field in China. Observations of the macroscopic characteristics of cumuliform clouds are first described and used as the basic data for the theoretical investigations on cumulus dynamics. These characteristics are used to formulate the basic dynamic equations. A quantitative analysis of the factors governing convective development is then presented in order to probe into the dynamic processes of the growth of cumuliform clouds. The development and structure of thermal convection in general are also examined and a further attempt is made to assess the feedback effect of the condensation of water vapor. Finally, problems which require further research are outlined. This monograph may serve as a ready reference for researchers in meteorology, professional workers, research students and teachers in higher educational institutions. Author
