Abstract:

Viruses of variola-vaccinia subgroup may be divided into three groups according to their capacity to multiply in L-929 cells four of the dermal strains of vaccinia viruses under study do not multiply in L cells irrespective of multiplicity of infection. Neurovaccinia virus, GM strain, multiplies only with high multiplicity of infection. The virus of rabbit pox and two neurovariants of vaccinia virus multiply intensively both with high and low multiplicity of infection. In viruses not multiplying in L cells there is no replication of the viral DNA synthesis of virus-specific antigen they are capable, however, of reactivating the virus inactivated by heat. From a strain of vaccinia virus not multiplying in L cells mutants were isolated which intensively multiplied in these cells. Author
