High modulus R.A.E. carbon fibers were placed in a resin matrix on an aluminumbacking and strained. The behavior near breaks in the fibers was examined. Ifthe interface was weak the broken fiber ends slid back in their holes in theresin and the load in the fiber was transferred by friction at the interfaceover a distance of about 1.2 mm. If the interface was strong, the load wastransferred from broken fibers mainly elastically over a distance of about130 micrometers. Author, modified-PL
