Abstract:

The paper discusses research in the use of time-sharing systems for war gaming and potential application of results to three projects in the Logistics Department. Chapter 1 discusses the use of time sharing for the immediate or short-range development and the application of specific models or systems. The time-sharing system has made possible more rapid development of computer algorithms for the logistic simulation models than is possible in a batch environment. Chapter 2 discusses the use of a time-sharing system in the development of heuristic problem-solving and learning techniques for computer programs in war gaming. Two types of military problems have been considered first, two-sided war-gaming problems in which the objective is to defeat or at least perform well against an adversary second, simulation and optimizing problems in which the objective is to find a feasible, a very good, or an optimal solution to a planning or operational military problem.
