The report describes some experiments designed to understand the mechanism of low energy tear fractures in high strength aluminum alloys and steels. The beginnings of fracturing are studied, as are fractured surfaces using replicas, thin foils, and the scanning electron microscope. The role of inclusions on various scales leads to recognizable features of the fracture. Author
