Abstract:

A method of viewing a dusty surface during retrorocket descent such as a planetary landing is proposed which minimizes the effect of the dust. The method consists of making observations through the central region of the rocket plume where the dust concentration is considered a minimum. Problems in ranging and location of the surface normal are briefly considered. Experimental work is proposed to determine the feasibility and problems associated with this method. Author
