Previous laboratory study has shown that a significant improvement in fatigue life and fracture behavior of the 175mm M113 gun tube can be achieved by the use of autofrettage in combination with a lower strength higher fracture toughness material See AD-686 276. Based on these results six 175mm M113E1 gun tubes were fabricated of 140-160 ksi yield strength material and autofrettaged. These tubes were subjected to extensive firing tests. Summarized herein are the results of the firing tests and subsequent laboratory fatigue and fracture analysis of four of the six tubes. Results are presented and discussed for both the chamber and origin of rifling region of subject tube and analyzed in terms of the fracture mechanisms and fracture mechanics. The technique used for the autofrettage of subject tube and for ultrasonic crack depth measurement are also described. Author
