Abstract:

Three rocketborne measurements of night airglow emissions are reported. Maximum OI-green emission of 14 Rkm was observed at 102 km. Maximum continuum emission of 0.04RAkm was observed at 91 km, and maximum OH 8,3 emission of 44 Rkm was observed at 97 km. Simultaneous measurement of high-energy electron flux and OI-green emission showed that no significant amount of excitation resulted from high-energy electron bombardment. These emission measurements, together with similar measurements reported by other investigators, were analyzed to determine the excitation mechanisms responsible for the emissions. Author
