The various modes of plastic deformation possible in polycrystalline alumina - basal and non-basal slip, basal and rhombohedral deformation twinning, diffusional creep, and grain boundary sliding - are discussed. Recent experiments concerned with hot working of polycrystalline alumina at temperature of approximately 1750 - 1950C and the brittle-ductile transition in fine-grained alumina at approximately 1200C are interpreted with emphasis on the deformation mechanisms.
