Abstract:

Two models were designed, fabricated, and tested. The most optically complicated model is designated the 5858 system. It includes a 20-beam optical unit and a separately enclosed power supply. The other model, the 3051 system, has a 4-beam optical unit and a power supply identical to the one for the 5858 system. Each optical unit contains one helical flashtube that produces 3.78 candela-seconds per joule. The 5858 system was designed to produce a centerline effective intensity of not less than 10,000 candelas, and a minimum effective intensity of 5,000 candelas over a 15 deg x 30 deg rectangular pattern - when flashed twice a second with a power input less than 1000 volt-amperes. The measured intensities were approximately one-half the required values. The 3051 system was designed to produce a minimum effective intensity of 5000 candelas over the specified pattern. The measured effective intensity is 6240 candelas. Both systems therefore failed to achieve the original light. Author
