Abstract:

Stimulated radiative emission at the gap frequency in superconductors due to quasi-particle pairing is found to be more likely than stimulated phonon emission. Threshold conditions for lasing in normal-to-superconducting metal junctions were calculated. Criteria are established for determining the magnitude of current density in a superconductor which will destroy the energy gap. The range of several parameters for which radiation may be expected in injection type lasers is presented. A temperature dependent calculation of these lasing conditions for tantalum is also given. Experimental confirmation of the existence of stimulated emission in Al-Ta point contacts is presented. Author
