The E region of the ionosphere roughly 90 to 140 km above the earths surface is normally well-behaved and predictable. At times, narrow layers of ionization known as sporadic E or Es form in this region. These layers, which take different forms in the equatorial, temperate and auroral zones, are interesting both from the scientific and radio propagation standpoints. Author
