Abstract:

The report describes the results of an investigation into the feasibility of combining the high compressive strength of portland cement concrete and the superior tensile strength of epoxy or polyester resin concrete into a composite beam. This would increase the beams flexural strength and improve the corrosion protection for the reinforcement at large deflections by eliminating tensile cracks. The report describes in detail the development of high-strength resin properties of the selected mixtures. Also included are the results of third-point loading tests of 12 reinforced and unreinforced composite beams with 1-12- and 3-in. -thick layers of epoxy and polyester resin concretes.
