Abstract:

Model I of the Army Heart Monitor formerly called the Cardiac Arrest Indicator is an electronic device which accepts the electrocardiogram ECG and makes distinctive indications when cardiac standstill or ventricular fibrillation occurs. This model is a first step in the development of a compact, rugged, and inexpensive monitor for hospital patients and for Army field use. Model I differentiates ventricular fibrillation from the other myocardial waveforms on the basis of the frequency spectrum of the ECG signals. Tests using tape recordings of bizarre ECG waveforms as well as a theoretical analysis have shown that frequency spectrum alone is not sufficient to determine if ventricular fibrillation is present. However, Model I did make proper indications for more typical myocardial waveforms and showed the feasibility of designing the required monitor. Author
