Abstract:

For the determining bis-phenolic antioxidants in petroleum oils by infrared spectroscopy, the bands corresponding to the hydroxyle groups are convenient as analytical bands, i.e., 3496cm for 2,2-methylene-bis 4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol, 3435cm for 2,2-di-thio-bis 4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol and 3410cm for 2,2-thio-bis 4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol. From the intensity at the maximum of the absorption bands, found by the basic line method, the antioxidants may be determined with an average relative error of 1.3 percent for concentrations of 0.05 up to 1 percent of weight in the oils.
