The space-time correlations of velocity and temperature fluctuations lead to definitions of celerities and the corresponding equations with and without frequency filtering have been written. These equations show that the celerities differ in general from mean velocity of the fluid mainly due to the effect of triple space-time correlations. Measurements have been made in a turbulent boundary layer on a heated plate. The results concerning celerities and correlations for temperature show a partial analogy between temperature and velocity pattern, but the effects are stronger for the temperature pattern. New apparatus and methods for measurement of space-time correlations for temperature and velocity fluctuations are described, using a correlation computer and linearized constant-temperature anemometer.
