The reactor is a powerful source of neutron and gamma-radiation and is designed for a wide range of scientific research experiments. Water is used both as the moderator and the reflector as well as for the coolant. It is fueled with enriched uranium, and is provided with approximately 30 vertical experimental channels. Ten horizontal channels can be used to bring neutron beams from the reactor core into an experimental room. The reactor is also provided with hot chambers used for the preparation and radiochemical processing of highly radioactive samples, and there are chemical chambers for the preparation and chemical processing of samples with low radioactivity. Both the hot and chemical chambers are provided with lead glass, manipulators, and other remote control devices. The reactor can be equipped with four pneumatic tubes for working with short-lived isotopes.
