Abstract:

A characteristic feature of modern industrial society is the extent to which it is possible for people to change occupational and social position. In recent years a great deal has been written about the causes of mobility, the pattern of mobility and the role of education in the mobility process. A considerable amount of data about the consequences of mobility is available in social surveys and community studies. This data provides the basis for the present paper in which the pattern of inter-generation mobility in Britain is outlined and some of the major psychological consequences of the process are described.
