An apparatus, the burner rig, used to evaluate materials for use in gas-turbine engines operating in a marine environment, is described. Testing procedures are outlined, and results are discussed in relation to gas-turbine engine tests. The rig operates by the combustion of diesel oil or jet fuels. Injected seawater and the products of combustion pass over as many as 48 test specimens. Although the rig operates at atmospheric pressure and low velocities, it can generate a test environment that results in hot corrosion as found in actual engines.
