The fundamental aim of this research program was to extend the currently available limit of pressure and temperature measurements by devising new apparatus and new techniques. Results of a study of the crushing strength of tungsten carbide made possible a re-design of pistons used in high pressure experiments and increasing the pressures available in single-staged piston cylinder operation from 45 Kilobars to 80 Kilobars.
