Several formulae are presented which relate main dimensions of homopolar alternators. These expressions describe relationships between diameter, internal power, centrifugal and shear stresses, pole pitch, RPM, and armature length. Optimization of armature length for given saturation and rotor teeth based on the heteropolar flux component is discussed. Also described are exciting winding designs for minimum copper losses and minimum iron weight. In addition, length of air gap, stator housing dimensions, and maximum output power of homopolar machines are discussed. A dimensional analysis of a series of dimensionally similar homopolar machines is presented. Relations between rating, weight, losses and the linear dimensions of these machines are discussed. Author
