Abstract:

The report discusses a postulated, very general interpretation of fracture in terms of how dislocation mobility affects the local fracture stress. However, it is difficult to correlate this concept directly to the slow crack growth process which occurs in many complex materials. Also, there has been little experimental evidence of dislocation dynamics and discontinuous crack motion in complex materials which would allow such a model to be established. This program was initiated to study these characteristics in an effort to establish such a fracture criterion. Author
