The construction of a crossed-field amplifier which will incorporate the results of our noise studies is in progress. A flattened-helix circuit suspended on sapphire rods is being used with a beam originating from a Kino short gun. Work on the crossed-field gun design method developed by R. A. Rao is being carried on to obtain designs for magnetically shielded guns. An experimental and theoretical evaluation of the crossed-field acoustic-wave amplifier is being conducted. The comparison of optimum performance of ZnO longitudinal acoustic amplifiers with the InSb crossed-field counterparts has continued with an effort being made to get an improved basis for comparison in heat dissipation capabilities. A detailed study of the dc electron flow under crossed-field conditions has been made. Conditions at the ends of the semiconducting bar are such that there are significant effects on the electron velocity parallel to the direction of the acoustic-wave beam. The affects on the gain and direction of the amplified acoustic wave are studied. Author
