Abstract:

Prose texts of some two dozen Chinese authors of the 1930s are analyzed for rhythmic patterns of segment- and sentence-length usage. A two-dimensional classification space based on these parameters allows a Cartesian distance ranking, both interauthor and from an established norm. Application of autocovariance and subsequent Fourier transform to the parameters shows varying degrees of periodic structuring and suggests that a unique classification may exist for a given writer.
