Abstract:

Older investigations with models of airflow over mountains reveal the basic mechanism of the turbulence and, with a simple scaling-up to the dimensions of the atmosphere, the maximum vertical velocities and scales indicated were obtained. When mountain waves break, they settle down to a steady-state turbulence at a level of intensity considerably below the level of intensity when the waves first begin to break. The maximum vertical velocities in conditions when the breaking begins were obtained. Author
