Abstract:

An expression is derived for determining approximately 1 dimensions of the effective radiation zones of conical spiral antennas and 2 propagation direction of waves radiated at each point of such a zone. This expression is shown to confirm some previously advanced hypotheses on the radiation mechanism of modern wide-band antennas. As an example, the equation is applied to an analysis of logorithmic and Archimedean spiral antennas. On the basis of theoretical results obtained in this study, which agree well with existing experimental data, the following conclusions are reached 1 the largest contribution to the radiation field in a given direction is made by those sections of the spiral antenna in which plane waves emitted in that direction are added in the phase 2 since the current distribution in a spiral conductor is well approximated by a travelling wave, the conic spiral antenna radiates circularly polarized waves most effectively and 3 the conic spiral antenna permits wide-band operation while simultaneously emitting several harmonics.
