Abstract:

By the term discrete method of plate and shell design is understood a numerical method which leads to a discrete solution, in particular the differential-difference method or the straight-line method. Earlier-developed discrete methods dealt with simple cases of plate and shell design. In this article it is shown that a discrete method can be generalized in a simple way for more complex problems in the mechanics of thin-walled structures e.g., bending of a flexible plate, strength of an orthotropic, noncircular, cylindrical shell, and the final integro-differential equations obtained can be solved by successive approximations utilizing a discrete solution of a simple analogous problem as the zero approximation.
