Abstract:

A simpler-than-conventional digital-to-analog converter is suggested, which includes two counters 1 and 2 having a scaling factor K. The input number is placed in counter 1 while counter 2 is set in its initial position. Both counters are fed from a pulse generator. Overflow pulses are time-shifted. The ratio of this shift to the period between overflow pulses - a phase shift between two pulse sequences - is independent of the clock frequency and is determined only by the number placed into counter 1. This phase shift is held until the next number is fed to counter 1 hence, the converter also has a memory characteristic. The phase shift can easily be converted into voltage or current.
