Abstract:

The current method for predicting the protection against fallout radiation by above-ground structures is tested against various experiments. The scope of the study is limited to the radiation entering the structure by penetrating vertical barriers. Various approximations inherent in the method, such as energy dependence, assumed barrier shapes, and separation of barrier and geometry effects, are investigated by comparison with experiments. In general it is found that the existing method gives reasonable agreement for the types of structures of interest in applications of the method. Estimates of the resulting errors are given. Author
