Abstract:

A single-cycle infection of scaben-treated HEp-2 monolayers with coxsackievirus B5 showed no increase in total virus yield but an enhancement of virus release which was correlated with an earlier cytopathic effect. These findings were further substantiated in multiple-cycle infections where enhanced release shortened the period necessary to infect all the cells in a monolayer, thus, in effect, producing higher yields of virus in a shorter time. Larger plaques were obtained with both coxsackievirus B5 when scaben was added to the agar overlay. The mechanism of action of scaben is not clear but we suspect that it alters the cell membrane and thus enhances virus release. Author
