The modulated force probe technique was employed to determine the drag coefficients of spheres and cones in the transitional and near-free-molecule regimes at hypersonic Mach numbers. A free jet served as the flow field. Data scatter is very low agreement with data and theories of other investigators appears good. The cone drag data extend, almost two orders of magnitude in Reynolds numbers, previously published information. No evidence of drag overshoot was found. A Mach 1.5 nozzle was designed for 10 microns Hg exit pressure and its measured performance agreed well with theoretical calculation. The nozzle was used to supply a rarefied flow field over a flat plate with a sharp leading edge. Surface pressures were measured and are in qualitative agreement with weak interaction theories at small values of viscous interaction parameter and with the BGK discrete-ordinate technique at large values of viscous interaction parameter. The present status and projected research program for electron beam fluorescence probe are discussed. Present development problems center around beam focussing. Author
