A new prototype transducer capable of making direct measurements of fluid density in situ has been developed. The theory of design, the method of construction, and the performance in laboratory tests are discussed in view of its possible application as an oceanographic tool for precise measurement of seawater density. Present sensitivity is within an order of magnitude of the capabilities of indirect techniques currently being used for seawater. Suggestions are made for improving the precising, and indications are given that the device has potential as a sea-going oceanographic instrument. Author
