Abstract:

Rates of thermal decompositions for six isomeric tetranitrobiphenyls were measured at 260C and 280C by analysis of undecomposed tetranitrobiphenyl. At 260C, the sterically crowded, 2,2, 6,6-, 2,2, 4,4- and 2,2,4,6-tetranitrobiphenyls decomposed at the rate of 1.6 plus or minus 0.5 hour, about ten times faster than the relatively uncrowded 3,3,5,5-, 4,2,4, 6-, and 3,2,4,6-tetranitrobiphenyls. The gaseous products formed during 1-3 decomposition were found to be NO2, N2, NO, and H2O. Evidence is presented for the homolytic cleavage of C-NO2 bonds as a first step in decomposition. Author
