A mechanical unit for shelter air revitalization was designed. The unit is to be used during those periods when a protective shelter is sealed and isolated from the outside world, with no external power supply. The unit will control the chemical environment that is, add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide and odors. The chemical and mechanical aspects of the development were resolved. Human factors continue to be an influence in that unforeseen operational problems may persist and must be accommodated. The design of the unit and the selection of its components was based on evaluation of operational, functional, and economic parameters. Design criteria are summarized as follows 1 Shelter capacity 100 sedentary adults 2 Sealed occupancy period 24 hours 3 Air circulation rate 3 cfmperson 4 Unit airflow resistance 0.25 in. - H2O at 300 cfm 5 Unit power requirement 0.02 - 0.03 hp 6 Operating temperature range 35F to 90F. In the prototype unit which is under construction, odors will be removed by a filter using 30 pounds of activated charcoal. Oxygen will be supplied by pressure cylinders storing 2,500 scf of oxygen. Carbon dioxide will be removed by 888 pounds of Baralyme, a dry chemical absorbent. Baralyme was selected as the most promising absorbent - safest to use, lowest airflow resistance, least expensive - based on a literature search followed by an experimental evaluation. Air will be circulated by a battery powered fan. The batteries will remain on trickle charge while the unit is inoperative. Author
