Abstract:

This is a compilation of antenna-design information based on Soviet and Western published sources. General design principles are discussed formulas for antenna Q-factor, efficiency, voltage, mechanical load, weight of supporting structures, and antenna-wire diameter are cited. The antenna efficiency and passband depend only on the volume occupied by the antenna system and are independent of the configuration of this system. The antenna voltage is determined by the radiative power it increases with the height of masts used for supporting the antenna array. Use of higher masts for VLF antennas is deemed expedient. L-shaped, T-shaped, umbrella-type, and valley-type antennas are used. Techniques of calculation and formulas are given for these antenna parameters static capacitance, natural-resonance wavelength, effective height with an allowance for wire sag and excitation of metal supporting structures, electric strength, ground loss resistance, antenna efficiency, and special features of multielement antennas.
