The overall problem of cockpit evaluation is discussed. Within this context, the specific problem of cockpit geometry evaluation is explored. Known methods for evaluating geometry the physical layout of the entire cockpit complex-displays, controls, seats, personal equipment, windshieldcanopy, interior surface shape, openings for ingress and egress are summarized. Their advantages and disadvantages are presented. The application of modeling techniques that take advantage of computer capability to improve geometry evaluation is discussed. A research program, in progress, directed toward the full development of a computerized model of the physical aspects of flight crewmen and any cockpit configuration is presented in some detail.
