Abstract:
The phase transition in solid hydrogen is examined with a simple Ising-type model used for the intermolecular interactions. A statistical treatment based on Bethes method is used. For pure ortho-hydrogen, no abrupt transition between the orientationally ordered and disordered phases is found, but the molecular field approximation gives a first-order transition. In addition, the concentration dependence of the actual fcc-hcp transition temperature is interpreted in terms of this model. Author
