The article discusses the results of theoretical and experimental studies of the parameters of various types of slot antennas resonator slot antennas for use on ships, narrow-band antennas, linear slot resonator antennas, and broad-band antennas installed in metal surfaces which approximate in form the real superstructural configurations of high-speed vessels. The authors conclude 1 The development and employment on high-speed vessels of omnidirectional and low-directional flush-mounted slot antennas is a task of great urgency, the accomplishment of which will permit significant improvements in the efficiency and mechanical strength of radio communication antenna-transmission line systems. 2 In the vicinity of the metal masses antennas of this type have better radiation characteristics than the dipole antennas presently in use, since the radiation patterns of dipole systems in the horizontal plane are severely truncated because of the detrimental effect of the mirror image in the metal masses like hull plating. In such cases, the slot radiator and its mirror image coincide. 3 By means of several generally two properly phased slot radiators, driven in counter-phase practically omnidirectional radiation patterns can be formed which are subject to less irregularity than those provided by an analogous system of dipole antennas. 4 Flush-mounted antenna systems can be designed based on slot radiators which will be very strong although relatively light weight.
