Abstract:

In this work, a theory of the electroacoustic resonances of a nonuniform plasma that is based upon an expansion of the Vlasov equation is presented. The results of the expansion, when combined with Maxwells equations, yield a single differential equation describing the rf acceleration as a function of distance into the plasma. The solution for the eigenmodes of a diffusion controlled plasma are obtained using a boundary condition that is based upon the reflection of electrons from the steady electric field in the plasma. The effects of collisionless Landau damping are considered by comparing the unperturbed electron trajectories with the velocities of the waves constituting the resonances in the phase plane. The eigenvalues for the resonances are compared with those obtained from moment theory. Author
