Abstract:

The report presents a demonstration of how the concepts of fracture mechanics can be used in the design and fabrication of boosters from commercial steels and commercial fabrication techniques. Minimal nondestructive testing quality control procedures are required to avoid compromising reliability. Example calculations are given that demonstrate the materials selection processes consistent with a program to design the booster stage of future space launch vehicles on a minimum cost basis. Present major cost items with high strengthweight materials that can be minimized are the exotic fabrication techniques and rigid quality control procedures need to ensure reliability. Author
